Give me the night
Night has always been associated with the darker side of the human psyche. It transforms our notion of the world from one of routine and certainty to a world of uncertainty, danger & unknowing. Brave is a man who steps outside the safety of his home into the night for he may never return.
OK a tad over the top but there is always a slight feeling of danger in the back of our minds when we go out alone at night. But for us night photographers it’s something we love, well we are a peculiar breed, creeping around dark streets and alleyways wearing heavy coats with big hoods carrying a big pole with a camera attached to the end, scary in itself to some.
Night photography differs greatly for each photographer, some shoot bright cityscapes, some will photograph people going about their business, some shoot fireworks but for me it provides a means to get away from the hectic humdrum of life and find solitude, surrealism and mystery, to see the world almost empty of mankind.
If you walk along an alleyway during the day the chances are you will notice nothing, you are too busy getting from A to B, but look at a night photograph of that alley and you will look at almost every detail of the image because in that image is something not normally seen. Solitude! This year I plan to shoot a portfolio of night images of various different backstreets, alleyways, harbours, parks and squares in fact anywhere I can find to create the images I want.
So if you see me creeping around your street late into the night, I’m not a burglar. I’m just looking for solitude and creativity.
As this project progresses I will add some of the final images to a gallery on this website (coming soon) and when it’s finished I will produce an exhibition of the final images. The venue and date is to be arranged. Don’t forget to add your comments (Below), they are appreciated.
